We’ve got three photographers scrambling around downstairs at UAH hockey games, and we think that you like what you’ll see. Chris Brightwell has posted his photos from Friday night and Saturday night, and we’ve got photos from Jazzmine Jordan and Timothy Burns as well.
First up are Jazzmine’s photos:

To be fair, this sign is up for every opponent, and not just hockey. It really needs to be taken down.

This was a tough weekend for the boys, with only one goal for. UAH has yet to score a goal 5-on-5 this season; if the disallowed goal from Friday night been good, that statement would be false. The team has struggled to score for the last few seasons, but the good takeaway from the weekend is the great team defense on Saturday night. Carmine Guerriero looked great in net, but his defense gave him a lot of help: intercepted passes, checking players in the crease, sticks in the way, shins in the way. Bemidji State only had a handful of Grade A chances on Saturday, which is something that you can’t say about Friday.
We can hope that this progression continues next weekend into Ferris State. Everyone enjoy your week: we’ve got more good information for you starting with Michael’s look around the WCHA on Monday.

Color correction, pan through, and need to open up half a stop at least. Said the “old pro.”
Will, thanks for the feedback. Shooting through the glass is tough. I’ve shot hockey before, but the others haven’t. Lots of learning happened this weekend.
Preaching to the choir, Chris. Invest in some glass wipes and clean your spot before you shoot through it.
I tried using my sleeve to wipe off the glass, but that didn’t do much for the stuff on the inside. :-/ Maybe I can drill a hole into the glass and no one will notice. 😉
You just need the time to get in early and scope out the good spots. I did it up until we moved, still wish I were there to do it, there are places that are acceptable.

No disrespect but these shots aren’t that great. White balance is way off, theres so much haze in the images it’s hard to even tell whats going on and a bunch are out of focus. I’m curious what these were shot on. I know everyone doesn’t have $30,000 worth of gear laying around but for a college you would think they would be better; especially if there are 3 photographers getting these shots.
Justin, have you shot hockey? It’s hard. Especially when we’re shooting through dingy glass. The light isn’t bad, but the glass is full of puck marks and scratches. It’s not the clearest, either (notice the haze and the yellow tint).
I appreciate the feedback, but we’re volunteer (amateur) photographers who are bringing our own gear to these games. We’re still learning.
Yes, I shoot hockey very often. I hate the glass they have at the VBC, it hasn’t been replaced in a very long time and the lack of photographer holes is just ridiculous. Wasn’t trying to bring anyone down; I just assumed the college had their own pro photographers they were paying for. My suggestion would be to do a bunch of post processing on the images as this is the only way to fix the color issues and get around the dirty glass. Remember, shooting in raw is your friend.
Thanks, Justin. I did plenty of post on mine (check out the Flickr links at the top of the linked article) and you’ll see what I did. My Friday night shots weren’t great, but Saturday was much better.
Wait, you shoot hockey “often,” and yet you don’t have a single image of the sport on Facebook or on your website? To use the vernacular, pics or it didn’t happen.
I do have hockey images on my website; although I do not post 100 images per event I shoot. I have shot about 20-30 Havoc games and am set up to shoot a bunch this season as well. I currently shoot NASCAR and have been published in various magazines, including Auto Week, and my shots have been selected for “Shots of the week” and “Best Of” on Cal Sport Media Wire.
That was Grohs bucket. Larose is the only without a UAH theme.
